Stored standard-rate preset
21%

Add VAT to a price before tax, or find the tax already included in a total. This page starts with a stored 21% standard-rate preset. The local VAT name listed here is TVA. Enter a different percentage if you have confirmed another rate for your transaction.

Dataset last checked . This is a dated preset, not a live rate lookup. Check the official references.

Sets the standard VAT rate. You can still edit the rate below.

Reading the quote or receipt

For an older Romanian TVA invoice, check the rate for its transaction date instead of replacing it with this 21% preset. The examples use RON; a matching 21% preset elsewhere in the table does not make the currencies or reduced-rate rules interchangeable.

Net: before VAT
Choose Net → Gross when tax still needs to be added to the amount you have.
Gross: including VAT
Choose Gross → Net when the amount already includes tax at one known rate.
VAT: the difference
The tax amount is the gross total minus the net amount. It is not another charge to add to the gross.

Add 21% to a net price

Multiply the pre-tax price by 1.21 to find the total. The middle column shows the tax being added, not the full payment.

NetVAT 21%Gross
100,00 RON 21,00 RON 121,00 RON
250,00 RON 52,50 RON 302,50 RON
500,00 RON 105,00 RON 605,00 RON

2.500,00 RON 525,00 RON 3.025,00 RON

Gross = Net × 1.21

Find the net price inside a gross total

Divide the tax-inclusive total by 1.21. Then subtract the net amount from the total to find the VAT. Simply taking 21% off the total gives the wrong result.

Questions

Does the 21% preset confirm the rate for my transaction?

No. It is the stored standard-rate preset in the Romania entry, from a dataset marked last checked 2026-07-26. Check the official guidance for the transaction date, location and type of supply, then enter the confirmed rate. The calculator does the arithmetic after you choose the rate.

Why can’t I subtract 21% to remove VAT?

The percentage is applied to the smaller, pre-tax price. At this preset, 100,00 RON net becomes 121,00 RON gross. To recover the net amount, divide that gross total by 1.21. Subtracting 21% of the gross total would remove too much.

How do I check a receipt with more than one VAT rate?

Use the subtotal for each rate separately, with the matching percentage. Do not apply the standard preset to the whole receipt if it contains several rates. Add the resulting tax amounts only after checking the separate groups and the invoice’s rounding method.

Can I calculate in a different currency?

Yes. The percentage calculation works in the currency of your input. These reference tables use the stored RON example setting; they do not establish which currency belongs on your invoice. Keep net, VAT and gross in the same currency. No exchange-rate conversion is performed.

Rate guidance and sources

Use the Commission overview for the rate framework and TEDB to look up Romania. For the treatment of a particular sale, check the national authority’s guidance for its date, location and product or service. A country preset cannot establish an exemption, a reduced-rate entitlement or a cross-border rule.

Other rates recorded in this dataset: 11%. This stored list may be incomplete or outdated; it is not a guide to which purchases qualify.

The examples round the displayed amounts. When reconciling an invoice, check whether its tax was rounded per line or on a subtotal; these can differ slightly.

The stored rate-review date remains 2026-07-26. Published by ToolsNow · Report an outdated rate.
