Questions

What is the VAT rate in Germany?

The standard Mehrwertsteuer (MwSt) rate in Germany is 19%. Reduced rates of 7% also apply. Food, books, newspapers, public transport and cultural events.

How do I add 19% VAT to a price?

Multiply the net amount by 1.19. For example, 100,00 € net becomes 119,00 € gross, of which 19,00 € is VAT.

How do I remove 19% VAT from a total?

Divide the gross amount by 1.19 — do not subtract 19%. A 119,00 € gross total contains 19,00 € of VAT, leaving 100,00 € net. Subtracting 19% instead would give the wrong answer.
