How to use
- Paste your draft. The counts update as you edit. Use Words for an assignment or article limit, and Characters for a short field or post.
- Check the length you need. No spaces excludes spaces, tabs and line breaks. The common-limit bars are guides; check the final text in the service where you will use it.
- Keep the totals. Use Copy counts to save the figures alongside your draft. For a talk, read it aloud to check the estimated speaking time.
Questions
Why might the word count differ from my editor?
This counter splits at whitespace. "Well-known" counts as one word and "well known" as two; a symbol standing on its own also counts. It does not find word boundaries in languages written without spaces. Use the required editor’s count when submitting work with a strict limit.
Do emoji count as one character?
In browsers with grapheme support, a family emoji or flag counts as one visible character. Older browsers fall back to Unicode code points, which can count the pieces separately. A destination app may use a different counting rule.
Are the common limits hard cut-offs?
Not all of them. Search-result titles and descriptions depend on display width, and an SMS containing emoji or some other Unicode characters can hold fewer than 160 characters in one segment. The bars are a quick length check, not a preview of what each service will accept or display.
How are reading and speaking times calculated?
Reading time uses 225 words per minute; speaking time uses 130. A 450-word draft therefore shows 2 minutes of reading time. Pauses, unfamiliar words and delivery pace can change how long it takes.
What counts as a sentence or paragraph?
The sentence count looks for text ending in a full stop, question mark or exclamation mark. Abbreviations can add to the count, and an unfinished sentence may not count at all. Paragraphs are separated by blank lines; a single line break starts a new line, not a new paragraph.
