Questions
How much should I tip?
It depends entirely on where you are. 15–20% is customary in restaurants in the United States; in much of Europe service is included and rounding up or leaving 5–10% is normal; in Japan tipping can cause confusion. This tool does the arithmetic, not the etiquette.
Should the tip be on the pre-tax or post-tax total?
Convention in the US is to tip on the pre-tax subtotal, though many people tip on the total for simplicity. Enter whichever figure you want to tip on.
What does rounding up do to the tip?
It rounds the total to the next whole unit and derives the tip from that, so the tip is no longer exactly your chosen percentage. That matches how people tip in practice — rounding the bill rather than the tip.
