Assumes a constant return and a contribution you never miss. Treat the timeline as a best case, and note that inflation erodes the real value of a fixed target over long periods.
How to use
- Choose what you want to know. The time it will take, or the monthly amount required.
- Enter your target and what you have already. Plus any interest rate you expect.
- Read the result. Including how much of the total comes from interest rather than your contributions.
Questions
How does interest change the timeline?
Meaningfully over long periods, barely over short ones. Saving €250 a month towards €10,000 takes 40 months at 0% and about 38 at 4%. Towards €100,000 the same rate saves years.
Should I include expected investment returns?
Be careful. A savings account rate is reasonably predictable; an expected stock-market return is not, and a bad sequence early on can put you well behind a straight-line projection. For goals within five years, plan at a conservative rate.
Why does my target feel further away over time?
Inflation. A €30,000 target set today buys noticeably less in ten years, so long-horizon goals should be revisited rather than fixed once.
What if the goal is unreachable?
With no contribution and no interest, it never completes, and the tool says so rather than showing an implausible number.
