Cropping is not redaction. This sets each page's CropBox — the area a viewer displays. Content outside it remains in the file and can be brought back. Use a PDF redaction tool to remove confidential content; cropping only hides it.
Cropping changes page boundaries rather than turning pages into images. It is not a way to reduce file size. The same margins apply to each selected page, so check the saved copy, especially pages with different sizes or rotations.
How to use
- Open the PDF. Use Previous and Next to inspect pages, especially if their sizes or orientations differ.
- Set the area to keep. Drag a rectangle on the preview, or choose Units and enter the Top, Right, Bottom and Left margins. Reset crop clears these settings.
- Choose Apply to. Use all pages, This page only or Selected pages. For a selection, enter page numbers such as 1-3,5.
- Crop & download. Open the saved PDF and check the edges on each affected page. Start with one page if you are unsure about the margins.
Questions
Can I crop out an address or account number safely?
No. The hidden content remains in the PDF and can be exposed by changing its crop box or extracting page content. Use a PDF editor’s redaction feature and verify the exported file. Cropping or simply drawing a box over PDF text is not redaction.
Will it shrink the file or blur the text?
It changes the visible page boundary without rasterising the page. Hidden images and text are still stored, so do not expect a useful file-size saving. Existing selectable text remains, including content outside the crop.
Can I use one crop on mixed page sizes?
The same physical margins are applied to each chosen page; they are not scaled to a percentage of its size. A margin that works on A4 may cut into a smaller page. Inspect each size and crop groups separately when needed.
What about rotated or already cropped pages?
The tool adjusts margins for page rotation, but calculates the saved crop from the underlying page boundary. An existing crop can make the preview and that boundary differ. Check the saved result rather than assuming the preview is exact for every PDF.
