An end time earlier than the start is treated as an overnight shift and marked +1d. Decimal hours are what most payroll systems expect. Overtime rules vary by contract and country — the 40-hour marker here is only a guide.

How to use

  1. Enter start and end times. Use 24-hour format, for example 09:00 and 17:30.
  2. Deduct breaks. Unpaid break minutes are subtracted from each shift.
  3. Add or remove days. Default is a five-day week; add rows for a six or seven-day one.
  4. Optionally add your rate. To see gross pay alongside the hours.

Questions

How do I enter an overnight shift?

Just enter the times: 22:00 to 06:00. An end time earlier than the start is treated as crossing midnight and marked +1d, giving 8 hours rather than a negative figure.

Why does payroll want decimal hours?

Because most payroll systems multiply hours by a rate, and 7h 30m has to be entered as 7.50 rather than 7.30. Getting this wrong is a common and consistent underpayment.

Is the gross pay figure my take-home?

No. It is hours times rate before any tax, pension or other deduction, and before any overtime premium your contract may specify.

How is overtime handled?

The tool flags hours beyond 40 in the week as a guide only. Overtime thresholds and premium rates vary by country, contract and sector — check yours.
