Water: cups to grams
Water is the reference point for density: one millilitre weighs one gram, so its volume and weight numbers line up exactly.

Convert cooking volumes
The charts above cover weight. If you also need to move between cups, decilitres, millilitres and spoons, this converts any volume:
1 cup (US) in every unit
A US cup is 236.6 ml, a metric cup is 250 ml and a UK tablespoon is larger than a US one — so the system your recipe was written in matters. Pick the matching unit rather than assuming.
Questions
How many grams is 1 cup of water?
One US cup of water weighs 237 grams. That works out to a density of about 1.00 g per mL.
How many cups is 100 g of water?
100 g of water is about 0.42 cups, or roughly 6.8 tablespoons.
Why can’t I convert cups to grams directly?
A cup measures volume and a gram measures weight, so the conversion depends entirely on the ingredient. A cup of water is 237 g, but a cup of honey is 340 g and a cup of cocoa powder is only 84 g.
Does the cup size matter?
Yes. A US customary cup is 236.59 mL, a US legal cup is 240 mL and a metric cup is 250 mL. Using a metric cup for water gives 250 g instead of 237 g — about 6 percent more.
