Mass conversion

Ounces to Grams (oz to g)

Convert a recipe’s ounce weight to grams for a kitchen scale. Make sure the recipe says oz by weight rather than fl oz by volume.

1 oz ≈ 28.3495 g — the calculator keeps the stored factor; this summary may be rounded.

A recipe calling for 4 oz of butter by weight

Starting measurement
4 oz
Converted value (rounded if needed)
113.398 g

Weigh the converted amount in grams. The same mass conversion works for another ingredient; its texture or packing does not change the factor.

How to convert by hand

Reference relationship (display may be rounded)

1 oz = 28.3495231 g

  1. Multiply the amount in ounces by the number of grams per unit.
  2. Use the calculator for the stored precision; copying a short displayed factor introduces extra rounding.
  3. Round the result to suit your measurement, after completing the calculation.

About ounces and grams

These are mass conversions, commonly called weight conversions. The same factor works for flour, luggage or metal. Cups and fluid ounces require a volume conversion instead.

Ounce

US / Imperial

The avoirdupois ounce is one sixteenth of a pound, or exactly 28.349523125 grams. It is different from a fluid ounce and from a troy ounce.

Commonly used for: Ingredient weights, food packaging and postal weights.

Gram

Metric (SI)

One thousandth of a kilogram. Grams measure mass, so a gram-to-ounce conversion needs no ingredient density.

Commonly used for: Recipe weights, food portions and small parcels.

Questions

Can I enter fluid ounces from a measuring jug?

No. Fluid ounces measure volume, so converting them to grams requires the ingredient’s density. Use this page only for ounces by weight; the kitchen ingredient pages provide volume-to-weight estimates.

How do I convert grams back to ounces?

Enter the value in the grams field above to work backwards, or open the Grams to Ounces converter. This uses the stored factors rather than dividing by a rounded number copied from the chart.

Why might the chart and calculator show different decimal places?

The chart uses a compact rounded display. The editable calculator can show up to six decimal places and uses the factors or temperature formulas stored in the library. More displayed digits do not make the original measurement more precise.

Precision and source

The calculator uses stored conversion factors and temperature formulas, then rounds the result for display. A short decimal in a chart is not a claim of exactness. For a calculation with several steps, keep as much precision as the original measurement supports and round at the end.
