Length conversion

Centimetres to Inches (cm to in)

Check a measured width against an inch-based size chart or product listing. Convert the measurement itself; clothing size numbers and product model names are not lengths.

1 cm ≈ 0.3937 in — the calculator keeps the stored factor; this summary may be rounded.

A frame opening measured as 25 cm wide

Starting measurement
25 cm
Converted value (rounded if needed)
9.8425 in

Compare the opening with the picture’s width, not the outside of the frame. The decimal result is an inch measurement, not a fraction marked on a ruler.

How to convert by hand

Reference relationship (display may be rounded)

1 cm = 0.393700787 in

  1. Multiply the amount in centimetres by the number of inches per unit.
  2. Use the calculator for the stored precision; copying a short displayed factor introduces extra rounding.
  3. Round the result to suit your measurement, after completing the calculation.

About centimetres and inches

Convert each measured dimension separately. A width stays a width and a diagonal stays a diagonal; changing units does not turn a product’s nominal size into a measured size.

Centimetre

Metric (SI)

One hundredth of a metre. Use centimetres for the measured length, not a clothing size number.

Commonly used for: Body measurements, paper widths and furniture dimensions.

Inch

US / Imperial

Exactly 2.54 centimetres under the 1959 international yard agreement. The symbol is in; a double-prime mark is also used on drawings.

Commonly used for: Screen diagonals, picture sizes and dimensions on US product listings.

Questions

How do I read a decimal inch result on a ruler?

The digits after the decimal are part of an inch. They are not a count of ruler divisions. Use a decimal-inch scale or round to a suitable ruler fraction only after converting; keep more precision when checking a close fit.

How do I convert inches back to centimetres?

Enter the value in the inches field above to work backwards, or open the Inches to Centimetres converter. This uses the stored factors rather than dividing by a rounded number copied from the chart.

Why might the chart and calculator show different decimal places?

The chart uses a compact rounded display. The editable calculator can show up to six decimal places and uses the factors or temperature formulas stored in the library. More displayed digits do not make the original measurement more precise.

Precision and source

The calculator uses stored conversion factors and temperature formulas, then rounds the result for display. A short decimal in a chart is not a claim of exactness. For a calculation with several steps, keep as much precision as the original measurement supports and round at the end.
