How to use

Should I use hyphens or underscores?
Hyphens. Google treats a hyphen as a word separator and has long recommended it; underscores are more likely to be read as joining words together.
How are accents and special letters handled?
They are transliterated to their closest ASCII equivalent: "Crème Brûlée" becomes creme-brulee. German ß becomes ss, Nordic æ/ø/å become ae/o/a, and symbols like & and € become "and" and "eur".
How long should a slug be?
Short enough to read at a glance — three to five meaningful words is typical. There is no ranking penalty for length, but long slugs get truncated in search results and are awkward to share.
Should I remove stop words?
Only when it keeps the slug readable. "best-of-year" reads worse than "best-of-the-year". Drop filler words when the slug is unwieldy, not as a rule.
